The 22-year-old patient from China suffers from a rare condition that causes excrement to build up inside his large intestine.
Surgeons were shocked by what they found – with Doctor Yin Lu of the the 10th People’s Hospital of Shanghai saying: ‘It looked like it could explode at any time.’
Tests confirmed that the young man had months – and possibly even years – of faeces trapped inside his body.
The man is believed to have been born with Hirschprung’s desease, giving him a lack of nerves in some muscles inside his colon.
Prior to the surgery, the man relied on laxatives and other constipation medicine to force bowel movements.
Reports claim he finally had surgery due to intense discomfort, but this was not confirmed by medics.
After a three-hour surgery, part of the intestine measuring 30 inches (76cm) and weighing 13 kg (28lbs) was removed.
The patient is stable and is expected to make a full recovery.
