White House Defends Trump’s Sharing ISIS Information With Russia

WASHINGTON — The White House said on Tuesday that it was “wholly appropriate” for President Trump to share sensitive information with senior Russian officials about an Islamic State threat and that he had not violated the expectations of the Middle Eastern ally that provided the intelligence.

“What the president discussed with the foreign minister was wholly appropriate to that conversation and is consistent with the routine sharing of information between the president and any leaders with which he’s engaged,” Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, the president’s national security adviser, told reporters, referring to Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister.

General McMaster said the conversation with Mr. Lavrov and Sergey I. Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States, in the Oval Office last week was consistent with “what the expectations are of our intelligence partners.” In fact, General McMaster said, “The president wasn’t even aware of where this information came from.”

The information about the Islamic State plot came from a Middle Eastern ally and was considered so sensitive that American officials had not shared it widely within their own government or among allies.

The general’s briefing came hours after Mr. Trump went on Twitter to defend his actions. In a series of early-morning posts on Twitter, Mr. Trump did not dispute reports that he might have provided enough details to reveal the source of the information and the manner in which it had been collected.

“As president,” Mr. Trump wrote, “I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and flight safety. Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism.”
