Donald Trump warns James Comey over 'leaks' in explosive Twitter rant

Donald Trump has said James Comey "better hope that there are no 'tapes'" in a tweet apparently warning the fired FBI head over leaks of their private conversations.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!", he said.

On Thursday, The New York Times reported a one-on-one dinner between Mr Comey and Mr Trump shortly after the president came to office, in which he demanded "loyalty" from the FBI director.

Mr Trump disputed the contents of the report.

But Mr Comey was "not worried about any tapes" that might exist of their conversations, a source told CNN on Friday afternoon.

The president also said on Friday that his surrogates cannot be expected to have "perfect accuracy" in their communications with the press, as he hit out at the "fake media" coverage of his decision to fire Mr Comey.

The president suggested cancelling all future press briefings "for the sake of accuracy" in a series of tweets on Friday morning.
